Denis Cortese, M.D., president and CEO of Mayo Clinic, took time during a trip to New York yesterday to visit with reporter Reed Abelson at the New York Times. Abelson authors the “Prescriptions” blog at the Times.
During the conversation, Dr. Cortese had the opportunity to share the Mayo Clinic Health Policy Center view on how to best provide insurance for all Americans — an exchange-type organization similar to the Federal Employees Health Benefit Program (FEHBP) which currently offers insurance products to all federal employees including members of Congress.
Under this type of system, all Americans would be able to choose an insurance plan that best meets their needs, with the government providing sliding scale subsidies to those who can’t afford insurance. One of the benefits for patients is that this insurance would be portable — not dependent on an employer so people would be able to keep their insurance if they change jobs or lose their job.

I am presently a patient at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. The neurologists at Mayo have literally saved my life from a disease that other doctors know little about if anything. However, as of January 1, 2010 my insurance will no longer be in network at Mayo in Jacksonville. I am desperate to contact Dr. Cortese to see if there is anything that can be done. I will not be able to pay the 40% that my insurance will not pay (due to being out of network) and I understand that Dr.Cortese is the person to contact. Can anyone help me contact Dr. Cortese? If so please email me. This is very devastating news to my family and me. I will be forced to go a doctor that does not have the knowledge that my doctors at Mayo have. I fear for what may happen. Thank you very much!
I posted earlier requesting contact info for Dr. Cortese. I must add that the Mayo Clinic in Rochester discovered the test for the disease that I have which is neuromyletis optica. I spent 3 months in the hospital in GA and was in a wheelchair four times before I made it to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.
Please contact me with contact info for Dr. Cortese.
